There are three common topics at Create-A-Mattress that prompt discussion of a bunkie board.

People with antique or specialty size bedroom furniture often have height limitations, so the mattress doesn’t obscure their decorative headboard. The second topic is in this age of ultra-thick mattresses, people often ask about options to reduce the overall height of their mattress set. A standard box spring is 9” high, a low-profile box spring is 6” high, and a bunkie board is just an inch or so high. With a standard 7” frame, this ultra-soft pillowtop set sits almost 35” off the floor. Luxuriously soft and supportive, that is too high for many buyers.

The last topic is the one for which the item is named: bunk beds. Often bunk bed frames provide too few slats for a mattress to sit directly on the frame. Box springs cannot be used with bunk beds, especially the top bunk, because the height tolerances are tight.
